Space: Techno Fish (2017)

Techno Fish (2017) is a performance installation by Haiiileen, merging sound, costume, and light to explore the fluidity of identity and the relationship between nature, technology, and rhythm.

As part of her early explorations into immersive performance environments, the piece transforms the idea of the “aquatic” into a futuristic and kinetic spectacle. Combining reflective materials, wearable art, and sound-reactive lighting, Techno Fish celebrates transformation through movement, echoing the hypnotic energy of electronic music and marine life.

Techno Fish is an audiovisual performance installation that positions the artist and participants within a glowing underwater fantasy world. The work utilizes reflective, iridescent materials, layered fabrics, and kinetic elements that respond to music frequencies — creating an ecosystem of light and rhythm.

The title symbolizes the meeting of organic and synthetic worlds: “Techno” representing mechanical rhythm, and “Fish” evoking fluid, adaptive motion. The performance invites viewers to enter a sensory immersion where sound becomes liquid and the body becomes light.

“It was about swimming through sound — embodying rhythm as a living creature of frequency.” — Haiiileen

  • Sonic Embodiment: Translating rhythm into movement, costume, and gesture.
  • Biomorphic Design: Using aquatic motifs to represent adaptability and emotion.
  • Techno-Organic Fusion: Blending mechanical repetition with organic fluidity.
  • Light as Habitat: Creating a visual world where the performer exists within a fabricated marine atmosphere.
  • Custom wearable sculpture designed with mirrored textiles and LED accents.
  • Light-reactive materials that shimmer and shift in response to strobe and color sequencing.
  • Soundtrack: Deep techno and ambient frequencies arranged to simulate water movement.
  • Environmental staging with projections and reflective pools to create illusionary depth.
  • Performance choreography emphasizing transformation, reflection, and flow.

Techno Fish was one of my first performances where I let my synesthetic perception take over completely. The rhythm, the color, the reflection — it all became one moving entity. I wasn’t performing music — I was performing light.”

This project marked a pivotal step toward the artist’s signature hybridized environments, combining fashion, sound, and sculpture to build experiential worlds.

  • One of Haiiileen’s earliest sound-responsive performances, blending costume art with installation.
  • Predecessor to Aqua (2017) and LightScapes (2018), introducing key visual and conceptual motifs.
  • Early example of the synesthetic methodology that defines Haiiileen’s practice.
  • Demonstrates her transition from staged fashion art into large-scale performance installation.

“The ocean and the dance floor — both are places where you can dissolve. Techno Fish was my way of exploring that surrender.”
