born
I am a first-generation Cuban-American artist, profoundly shaped by the heritage of my Cuban lineage. Both of my parents, Jorge Quintana Suárez (born in Havana, April 19, 1952) and Mercedes Mederos Quintana (born in Havana, February 1, 1957), immigrated to the United States from Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift on May 5, 1980, seeking freedom and new opportunities.
My family’s Cuban roots stretch deep into Havana and Santa Clara. My paternal grandparents, Isolina Suárez Gómez (born February 22, 1925, in Havana) and Bartolome Quintana Ramos (born August 24, 1925, in Havana), and my maternal grandparents, Juan Basilio Mederos Rodríguez (born June 14, 1933, in Santa Clara) and Esther Gálvez Gross (born December 22, 1938, in Santa Clara), carried with them a rich cultural and spiritual tradition that continues to inspire my life and artistic practice.
These narratives of migration, resilience, and cultural memory are integral to the spiritual languages and immersive environments I create. Through my work, I honor, reinterpret, and expand upon my Cuban lineage, building bridges between past and future generations. My practice embodies the vibrancy, strength, and visionary spirit of the Cuban diaspora, ensuring that our stories continue to evolve and resonate on a global scale.
