Bjork- The Spirit (2017)

In “Bjork: The Spirit” (2018), interdisciplinary artist Haiiileen translates her deep admiration for the Icelandic musician Björk into a living performance and photographic study. The work examines sound as spirit, transforming the artist’s own body into an instrument of reflection, vibration, and visual resonance.

Through light, texture, and costume, Haiiileen creates an ethereal landscape that captures the fusion of music, mythology, and metamorphosis, echoing Björk’s legacy while remaining rooted in her own synesthetic world-building practice.

Bjork: The Spirit is both a performance and an embodiment — a study in transformation through sound. The work presents the artist as a vessel of vibrational energy, translating sonic frequencies into visual language through costume, color, and light.

Haiiileen designed the environment as a hybrid between installation and stage — a sacred zone of emotion, technology, and reflection. Each movement and gesture became a frequency, every shift in light an emotion transmuted into form.

“It was about embodying the sound of spirit — feeling how emotion vibrates in color.” — Haiiileen

  • Embodiment of Sound: Using the body as a tuning instrument for emotional frequencies.
  • Synesthetic Expression: Translating auditory vibration into light, texture, and pattern.
  • Feminine Divinity: Honoring Björk as a muse of evolution, emotion, and transformation.
  • Metamorphosis: Exploring identity as fluid and ever-shifting through art and sound.
  • Costume and makeup design created by the artist as an extension of self-transformation.
  • Reflective mirrored surfaces symbolizing duality and perception.
  • Projected visuals evoking organic and digital textures inspired by Icelandic landscapes.
  • Soundscape inspired by Björk’s sonic structures — layered harmonics and atmospheric frequencies.
  • Performance documentation captured in still photography and short-form video.

“Björk has always represented what I call emotional futurism — the ability to merge technology with vulnerability. I wanted to explore how light could feel the same way sound does when it touches you deeply.”

This project marked an early milestone in Haiiileen’s exploration of emotion as frequency, laying the conceptual foundation for later works such as Neo Odyssey (2018) and Prismatic Life (2024).

  • Prefigures her later exploration of feminine energy and transformation through light.
  • Establishes the connection between music and emotion as integral to her artistic practice.
  • Serves as a prototype for her ongoing sound and synesthesia performance studies.

“In this work, I wasn’t just inspired by Björk — I became a vibration of her universe. Every reflection, every beam of light was a pulse of her music reimagined through me.”
