Sunset@Noon: Voicemail Sound Installation (2016)

As part of the Sunset@Noon installation for III Points Festival 2016, artist Haiiileen debuted a sonic experiment titled “Voicemail Array”, a sound-based artwork created in collaboration with Kevin Sands and Luna Garcia. The piece merged nightlife energy, digital intimacy, and ambient storytelling into a multisensory experience inside the artist’s Vaporwave Mall — a conceptual installation exploring nostalgia, consumerism, and digital subculture.

The Voicemail Sound Installation reimagined human connection through fragmented memory. Throughout the summer of 2016, Haiiileen recorded a series of spontaneous voicemails collected from friends, collaborators, and strangers she met during her nightlife explorations. Each voice became part of an evolving audio collage — a living sound diary of the Miami underground scene.

These recordings were remixed by Kevin Sands and Luna Garcia, who shaped them into an ambient, looping composition that filled the Vaporwave Subway Station, a neon-lit environment within Haiiileen’s Sunset@Noon installation at III Points. Visitors entering the installation were surrounded by echoes of real conversations, late-night confessions, and surreal audio fragments that blurred the line between public experience and private intimacy.

  • Vaporwave Nostalgia: The installation was inspired by early 2000s aesthetics and vaporwave sound culture, combining visuals, textures, and lo-fi recordings.
  • Audio as Memory: Each voicemail acted as a sonic timestamp, capturing the nightlife culture and emotional landscape of Miami in 2016.
  • Immersive Narrative: Designed as an ambient layer of the Sunset@Noon experience, the soundscape transformed the space into an underground dreamscape.
  • Participatory Performance: Visitors could listen, reflect, and interpret the emotional rhythm of the installation through sound.
“I wanted to turn the chaos of nightlife — the missed calls, the half-heard words, the things we never say — into an atmosphere you could walk through. Every voice is part of a bigger frequency.”
