In Hot & Cold (2017), artist Haiiileen explores the emotional and sensory balance between extremes — heat and stillness, chaos and calm. This performance-based light installation investigates how human emotion can be rendered as chromatic temperature through reflection, sound, and movement.
Created during a formative year in Haiiileen’s practice, Hot & Cold captures the beginnings of her signature synesthetic aesthetic — translating inner experience into immersive visual language.

Description
Hot + Cold is an immersive light-based installation exploring the psychological and spatial interplay of opposing color temperatures. Anchored in Haiiileen’s ongoing Cynostatic series — a sequence of bimonthly site-specific works in Downtown Miami — the piece transforms the gallery into a chromatic environment that shifts between warm and cool spectrums. The installation harnesses reflection, refraction, and spatial layering to create an environment where the viewer’s perception is in constant flux.
Arranged as a network of suspended fluorescent tubes coated with iridescent filaments, the work cycles through programmed lighting sequences that bathe the space in oscillating palettes of reds, greens, blues, magentas, and golds. Below, a reflective Mylar terrain multiplies and distorts these colors, turning the floor into a liquid-like field of shifting optical phenomena. The vertical and diagonal light structures create a sense of dynamic tension, referencing both architectural scaffolding and celestial constellations.
“I wanted to map emotion as frequency — to show how energy can shift from chaos to clarity in a single breath.” — Haiiileen
Conceptual Framework
In Hot + Cold, Haiiileen expands on the Cynostatic ethos: creating time-bound, interactive environments that explore the correlation between color and perception, and the way these variables alter spatial experience. The title evokes the dualities at play — heat versus chill, saturation versus absence, and the emotional registers triggered by each temperature shift.
By using high-reflectivity surfaces and light as sculptural material, the work becomes a feedback loop of viewer, space, and color. As participants move through the installation, their presence refracts in countless directions, placing them at the center of an ever-changing chromatic performance.
Archival Significance
This work holds an important place in Haiiileen’s trajectory as it marks a deepened commitment to bimonthly installation-making as an ongoing practice — a rhythm of creation that redefines the gallery as a space of continuous transformation. It demonstrates the early stages of her exploration into color correlation theory as applied in immersive environments, foreshadowing later works where light behaves as a temporal and emotional force.
Hot + Cold also stands as a pivotal Downtown Space installation in terms of technical execution, integrating pre-programmed lighting sequences that allowed the color narrative to unfold over time. This temporal element has become a hallmark of Haiiileen’s large-scale works.
Conceptual Framework
- Duality: Exploring the polarities of passion and calm, chaos and stillness.
- Chromatic Emotion: Red and blue light as metaphors for emotional temperature.
- Synesthetic Translation: Using sensory triggers to bridge emotion and perception.
- Reflection as Self-Study: Mirrors and light used to examine identity through energetic states.
Installation Components
- Dual light environments: red (heat) and blue (cool) chambers of reactive LED lighting.
- Reflective sculptural panels that refract and merge both temperatures.
- Performance choreography focused on breath, gesture, and emotional transformation.
- Sound design: low-frequency tonal shifts simulating thermal resonance.
- Documented stills and video capturing the transformation of color, light, and emotion.
Artist Reflection
“Hot & Cold was my first true experiment in emotional temperature. It was less about physical heat and more about how feeling moves through space — how it colors everything it touches.”
This piece solidified Haiiileen’s exploration of emotional duality through color, leading to future works such as The ORA (2018) and Neo Odyssey (2017). It marked the foundation of her synesthetic method, where emotion, light, and energy merge into a cohesive artistic language.
Archival Significance
- Marks Haiiileen’s early transition from fashion-based direction to experiential art and performance.
- Establishes her use of color as emotional narrative, a defining feature of later works.
- Serves as a precursor to the aura and synesthetic studies developed in The ORA and LightScapes.
- One of the earliest examples of her interactive color field environments.

“Every feeling vibrates between two temperatures. Hot & Cold was my way of tracing emotion through light, to find the stillness inside the fire.”
